The Escape

c. 2290–2320

Brain-safe rejuvenation: ageing becomes treatable, at a price.

Since about 2300, ageing can be stopped outright — but only by someone who can pay for unlimited brain renewal. Nobody yet knows how long the renewed will live, because the Escape is under two centuries old. Settlement polities plan for lives of about 300 years under the ration, and the Open Cities for about 150 on average: their rich expect to live indefinitely, while their poor still die of age at 70 or 80. The Mandate rations renewal evenly, as policy rather than right, and plans for lives of about 300 years. The Parishad gives free, equal care to everyone up to 100 and sells it after that, so lives there also average about 150. People in 2497 still die of age; it simply takes far longer, and money and law set the timetable.

An open secret. The Open Cities have never admitted the escape or the release, so officially neither happened. Everyone believes it and nobody can prove it, the Parishad included. Since the 2150s rival intelligence services have collected reports of breaches at Open City Vaults, and every other bloc, the Parishad among them despite the coalition, covertly keeps deep security and weapons ready to knock out the Open Cities' Vaults at the first hint of trouble. Linking the Vaults in the 2460s sharpened those fears. The pattern repeats: the Open Cities move first and take risks, and each new generation in an entrepreneurial culture thinks its elders over-cautious, though with lives of about 150 years the elders who lived through the mistakes are still alive to warn them.

The Long Ships (2280 onward; the private Lifeboat of 2230 was the exception). Before the Escape, three designs are drawn up: generation ships of humans, seed ships carrying frozen embryos raised on arrival by Raised AI parents, and mixed crews where humans sleep in rotating shifts while AI crew stay awake for centuries. After the Escape, true generation ships become a relic: renewed humans can simply ride the voyage themselves.
